Careful Planning
Careful planning is the key to a successful portrait.
Careful planning is the key to a successful portrait.  Think about what theme and feeling you want in your portrait (formal, casual, studio, outdoors, color or black & white, light colors or dark).

Photographing Children
When scheduling an appointment for a child
When scheduling an appointment for a child, make the appointment during your child’s happiest time of day.  Keep your child’s nap and feeding schedule in mind.

Children do not photograph well when they are not feeling well.  If your child is sick on the day of your appointment, please reschedule.

Clothing Tips
Solid clothes are best. Large prints, patterns and stripes are distracting and take away from the face.

Solid clothes are best.  Large prints, patterns and stripes are distracting and take away from the face.

For classic portraits, avoid clothing that is trendy or dates the picture. For children, avoid pictures of characters (Barney, Pokemon, Power Puff, etc.) However, tell me what characters are your child’s favorite.  I use this information to help me develop a good relationship with your child by talking to them about these characters.

If more than one person is in the photo shoot, then keep the clothing in the same color tones.  Make sure that they match and blend well together.  Be consistent.  Dress in all long sleeves, all sweaters, all short sleeves, all casual or all formal.  Stay with solid colors for groups.

Long sleeves look best on adults.

Don’t overlook the shoes and socks.  Make sure they are clean and they match.  Remember that children look very cute with bare feet.

For Black & White photos, texture is the key.  Clothing with lace or denim looks nice.  Stay away from red as it looks like plain gray in Black & White photos
